The best Mother’s Day gift I ever received was in 2003. It is a typed transcript of the conversation where my husband and our three oldest boys tried to decide what to get me. Devin was 10, Conner was 6 and Mitch was 5. Grant wasn’t born yet.
Handsome Hubby did some quick thinking, grabbed a pen and paper and recorded the discussion for posterity. This was printed onto pretty paper and I take it out and re-read it each year….
The men in your life recently got together to brainstorm about what to get you for Mother’s Day. Your 3 younger boys’ ideas were recorded verbatim, with appropriate context noted in parenthesis by your oldest boy, your husband.
“A diamond ring” – Devin
“A sombrero” – Devin
“A pet bunny, a live one!” – Conner
(an idea Devin thought was good until he found out someone has to care for the other pets too.)
“Pretty flowers” – Mitch
“A bunny statue” – Conner
(cause it’s easier to care for than a live one)
“Our love” – Conner
“A poem. Roses are red, apples are too, I love you” – Devin
(said with a hint of cheese in his smile)
“Roses are red, apples are too, this Valentine says I love you” – Conner
(exhibiting a little more sense for rhythm and rhyme)
“What’s a poem?” – Mitch
(stated with quizzical annoyance)
“A pretty colored rainbow” – Mitch
“A cake” – Mitch
“A kitten” – Conner
(another pet, see above)
“A pretty heart” – Mitch
“Pretty water for the flowers” – Mitch
(huh?)
“A bouquet of roses” -Devin
“A candle” – Conner
“Medicine to make her feel better” – Devin
“A pretty nice teacup” – Mitch
“I could show her some dancing moves” – Conner
(actually uttered with sincerity)
“We could decorate the house with loving things” – Conner
(a la Valentine’s Day)
“We could get her a teddy bear” – Devin
At this point, the meeting adjourned, Snickers ice cream with all the fixin’s having taken total control of all available attention.
Happy Mother’s Day from the men in your life, your 4 boys.
I know they also got me something that I unwrapped. I know that whatever it was, I liked it very much.
I know that whatever they give me this year, I will love, but it won’t be as precious to me as this transcript.
The bar was set pretty high in 2003… I don’t know how they’ll top it.
That was sweet — TFS
I don’t care if they get me anything — I’m just happy to be called mommy. I kiss, big hug, and I love you mommy — That’s it.
Your guys are great!
Hugs
That is THE SWEETEST thing I have ever seen. What a thing to cherish. Honestly, it’s these type of things that find the highest value in my book. I would LOVE something like this.
Can you put a word in to my hubby? He’s gonna get me flowers too {and my real present was this here spiffy new huge-ish screen lap top}. But I’d also really love something sentimental. 🙂
That is a keeper! I love the list they came up with. So sweet.
That IS sweet, and a high bar for sure.
That’s why I try to keep expressions of love and gratitude (and loving gratitude) to a minimum.
If you leave it all up to Devin, you’ll have a regular farm in no time at all.
What an amazing gift. You’re right. Tough topping that one.
Awww…. I love it!! SO great that hubby thought to write it down!!
Happy Early Mother’s Day!!

I love it! I think you should frame it. I have with things like that and they are the coolest things in the house:)
That is so sweet! What a smart hubby to think of writing that down for you. Awwwww!
That was so sweet! The simplest things are the best. Your husband is good at this gift thing!

What a SWEET thing your handsome hubby did for you that year! That is definitely a great Mother’s Day gift. Something that can’t be bought. Love that!
What a fantastic Mother’s Day present! You are one lucky lady!
What a great gift and what a smart hubby you have to record that conversation. I especially liked the suggestion of getting you medicine to make you feel better…what did they mean by that??
Hola! Stopping by via Ms. Savant. That’s very cute! I try to write down all the cute things my Savannah says but it’s hard to write them down instantly! Good call on your husband’s part!
Adorable! I love how little boys think!
Happy Mother’s Day!
I love that! Love it, love it, love it!
Such a priceless gift that will simply become more valuable with age. Hope your Mother’s Day weekend is full of joy and love.
Happy Twirls
