Easy summer decor with sea shells.

July 17, 2012 6 Comments

I loves me some sticks for fall and winter.
Sea shells are my summer version of sticks.  There is no easier way to bring a bit of the seaside to your home than just to dump a few shells around the house!
(Yes, I said dump some shells… quite the home designer lingo, no?)
I will explain why there are pine cones in the mix here in a little bit.
If you don’t live near the beach you can buy shells at your local craft store, on ebay… even the Dollar Store sells them in big bags.
If you actually get yours at the beach, I highly recommend rinsing them and then running them through your dishwasher.  (I put them in the silverware baskets.)  It ensures that you can bring a beachy look to your home without the beachy smell.

I put them in vases, in apothecary jars and in big bowls.  I have big ones that just sit on stacks of books on the shelves.  …just sitting around.

In addition to shells I have added in wine corks (they’re laying around all over the place here, so I just toss ’em right in), pieces of my faux red coral, shell necklaces and beads I picked up at a yard sale, bits of rough burlap that kind of reminded me of fishing nets, star fish, bits of sea glass… whatever feels coastal to me.  There are no rules. (Thank goodness.)

Ok, so the pine cones:
Many of you know that my ex-husband passed away a few months ago.  On Memorial Day my mom attended some Veterans’ Services at the cemetery where Mike is buried.  His grave is under a beautiful pine tree.  She stopped by to pay her respects and 2 pine cones fell out of the tree right in front of her and onto Mike’s grave.  She felt like they were little mementos for Devin and Conner, so she brought them back to the boys.
They will be incorporated into our home’s decor no matter what the season.
…even if it means they’ll be nestled in a bowl with Easter eggs.

What a touching and beautiful tribute!
The boys will treasure them, I am sure.
    Love the shells

I think the pine cones are perfect with the sea shells. And knowing the meaning behind them makes them even more beautiful! 🙂
