Greetings from Texas! My name is Christa and my twin sister Corrin and I blog at The Skelly Twins! Our family and friends are very important to us and socializing is a big part of our life. We are excited to share an easy way to get your neighbors to be more social and connected to important information.
A few summers ago, it was the end of the school year and I was ending my teaching career in order to be a stay at home mom. We were moving into a new construction neighborhood where few neighbors knew each other. My previous neighborhood set up a Yahoo group for neighborhood get togethers, restaurant and repair recommendations, criminal activity alerts, and other miscellaneous items.
I decided that I would create a similar Yahoo group (because not everyone is on Facebook) for South Shore, my section in my new neighborhood. My kids and I got to work and decided to make and deliver fun treats to celebrate the start of summer.
Orange You Glad It’s Summer! Creating a neighborhood Yahoo email group to communicate:
Supplies: clear craft bags, ribbon, 2 different patterned orange scrapbook paper for the different orange overlay, an Orange You Glad It’s Summer tag, crinkle paper (to save money make your own by shredding card stock) hole puncher, orange tic tacs, orange sliced candy, and a typed message.
*For the typed message, I introduced my family and stated the purpose of starting the South Shore Yahoo group. I asked people to send me their information so that I could add them to the group. I created a master document with family names, cell phone numbers, kid’s ages, and addresses. The group is private so it is only accessible by members. Make sure to put a deadline for neighbors to get back to you so that they respond in a timely manner.
Steps:
- Create A Yahoo (or Facebook) Group
- Create the “goody bags”
- Deliver the treats to your neighbors. If you have a wagon, deliver the treats using it. If your neighbors are not at home, tie the treat bag to their door.
- Wait for your neighbors to respond!
Overall, the Orange You Glad It’s Summer was a great success! I ended up throwing a Back to School Party at my house for the kids before school started and several of my neighbors attended because of the new Yahoo group. It has been two years and most of the neighbors use the group on a regular basis to communicate. It is a great way to get a neighborhood gathering to happen!
