Spring has (mostly) sprung and I am beginning to turn my attention to my patio area.
Not. Good.
I have some tall hurricane lanterns that have been sitting out in the elements (if Southern California really even has elements) for 2 or 3 years, and although we had sprayed a clear sealant over them, the paint was starting to chip and the metal was rusting. Time to give them some TLC.
The bottom was the worst.
Fortunately, there is a spray paint that is a rust converter. I am not a science person and therefore will not try to scientifically explain the process. I can’t explain to you how it bonds to the rust and there is some chemical reaction that neutralizes it/fuses to it and then the rust is paintable. I can’t tell you that.
I can tell you: Iz Ma-jic spray paint. Iz make rust go bye-bye. Iz goooood.
After removing the glass panels, I started by grabbing a paint scraper and one of Handsome Hubby’s wire brushes. Any paint that was loose was removed. I did not take off all of the existing paint.
The Queen isn’t coming over to sit on my patio, I just want it good enough that it looks nice again and want it protected going forward.
This is what the bottom of one of the hurricanes looked like when I got done scraping and brushing.
I sprayed the entire piece with the Rust Converter. There were textural differences between the newly stripped rusted spots and the original paint that remained fused to the piece.
To help minimize the difference in texture, I went over it with a few coats of Rustoleum’s Hammered Metal spray paint in Dark Bronze. The hammered metal texture of the paint helps to blend the two different areas.
I took the opportunity to properly clean the glass panels and clean up the candle sticks that were in there.
They are now back in their normal spot up on the BBQ area. Yay! $100 worth of hurricane lanterns saved by a $6 can of spray paint.

Thank heavens for spray paint. I am totally jealous of your awesome hurricanes. I’m sure your backyard is a fun place to hang out.
I’ll take both of those, please.
Kthanks.
I have several of these around the pool and I thought I had to toss them….not any more!
That is so cool! I am sure I have a pile of stuff that could use this treatment. Here in Norcal, we DO have elements. Looks fantastic!
They look great!
Miraculous product. Nice work.
Makes me wish I were a chemist. Seems like a cool job coming up with cans of stuff like that.
Hi Vivienne, Great save on the laterns! I have never heard of this paint but it is going on my shopping list. The lanterns are wonderful and now they look brand new.
Hugs,
Sherry
Oh must get for a couple of light fixtures!
They look as good as new! I am of the firm belief that we do have seasons here in SoCal! Anything under 60 = winter. hehe.
LOVE that stuff but I swear it’s like finding hens teeth around here. When I do find it a do a little dance and buy like 4 cans. The dance upsets the guys at ACE… they now fear me.
Life is like that!

They look great! I’ve been staring at my candelabra wondering how to fix it (same thing, paint chipping and rust)so thanks for the tip! Also, love that you use candlesticks to hold multiple candles inside the lanterns.
I’ll have to get some this spray paint for a couple chairs I have to makeover. Love the AFTER lanterns!
