A wash tub fire pit: how to find the right parts to make one.

May 29, 2013 2 Comments

We went camping over the Memorial Day weekend and we took our wash tub fire pit with us.
I really love this thing.  It throws more heat and it channels the smoke up, out and away from you.  With a normal campfire, there is usually an entire area that is getting smoked out, but with the wash tub fire pit it’s usually pretty clear.

Over the weekend, I received this comment on the original post:
“I am a former repairman for home appliances, and if you google “wash tub” you may get results, but the correct name for this “tub” is “inner drum” for a washing machine. There are two drums, one without holes which holds the water, and the second is the one with the holes to facilitate water circulation during the wash cycle.

So, if you go to a used appliance shop, ask them if they have an “Inner tub” for a washer and they will know what you mean, the one with the holes, not the other one. “

This is so good to know!  I wasn’t aware that there were two different drums and I sure wouldn’t have known what to ask for!  Thank you so much to freeman1776 for the information!

Places you can look for an inner drum?  craigslist, used appliance shops and garage sales.  I would think calling a repair shop and asking them to recommend a source would be helpful too.

Happy camping, everyone!

This is genius! Just told Hubby! If you're European and use a front loader, those glass windows make fabulous bowls. I used to put salad in mine. Too heavy to bring to the US, alas.
