Don’t tell him I said this, but I am the luckiest girl in the world to be married to my husband.
There is no one else on the planet who “gets me” the way that this wonderful man does. We just fit… and we balance each other so well. He’s an amazing man. Watching him makes me want to be a better person.
I’ve loved this man since he was a boy. At 15 years old, I knew he was who I wanted to be with forever. It took a while to get to this point. You can read about our journey here.
There are so many couples who get married and can’t see beyond the wedding and the big party. I couldn’t wait to get started with “everyday life.” Eight years ago, we had a judge meet us in a local park on a Friday night. The kids played on the monkey bars while we quietly got married a few yards away.
We had Taco Bell for a wedding dinner and spent the next morning at soccer games. We had a big party/reception about 6 months later. Shortly after that, we were pregnant with Grant and our blended family of 5 was about to become a His, Mine and Ours with FOUR Boys.
(My sister’s wedding, October 2003. I don’t know why I am always pregnant when asked to be in a wedding…)
He is my best friend.
My partner in crime.
He is my greatest adventure.
We’re both super competitive and we both like to be right. And we both usually assume that our way is the best way. (Of course that’s usually true in my case, but I digress….) We screw with each other all the time. You can read up on some examples of this here or here or here or….
What I don’t write about very often are all of the sweet things he does for me. Little things like bringing me home some chocolate when he knows I “need” it, or the big things like sending me an email in the middle of his work day, just telling me that he loves me… or cooking dinner when I’m tired… or any number of things that require thought, energy, and the generosity that sometimes gets pushed aside in a busy life.
Once I was on a weekend trip from hell. It was supposed to be fun. Handsome Hubby couldn’t go at the last minute but told me to go without him, knowing that our other friends on the trip would watch out for me. So much drama, fighting and general ickiness unfolded around me that I called home several times, almost in tears.
This awaited me when I finally got back home:
You probably have to click on the picture to enlarge it enough to see them, but HH put a little post-it-note on every. single. photo. in the entire house. He wrote a sweet note on each one of them to welcome me home. That is the kind of thing that means more to me than any gift he could ever give me. His love, his support, and the value he places on our relationship is priceless.
Each morning I wake up and thank God that we’re together. There are still mornings when I want to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.
We still have a normal relationship…
Does he occasionally drive me crazy? Sure.
Can he be one of the more stubborn and difficult people I’ve encountered? Sometimes.
But still… the worst day with him will always be better that the best day without him.
Happy anniversary Handsome Hubby. I love you and all of the things that make you so special (including your little quirks.) Thank you so much for loving me back and putting up with mine.
