Field Trip: Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert

August 17, 2012 1 Comment

I am not a desert person.  I get cranky if it’s too hot.  I can appreciate the “rugged beauty” of it all, as long as I am doing so from an air-conditioned car on the way to a more temperate climate.

Along our drive up to the Lake Tahoe area we have to go through the Mojave Desert.  On the way up, it’s stunning because we are driving through it as the sun is coming up.  The desert at dawn is glorious, particularly Red Rock Canyon State Park.

It’s even more glorious if you’re driving through the desert as the sun is coming up and you have U2’s Joshua Tree album playing at high volume…

It really is beautiful.  There are some crazy rock formations with red striations running through them, hence the park’s name.

Because it is so close to Los Angeles, it has been the location of a lot of films and TV shows over the years, especially Westerns.  There are campgrounds there, but the thought of camping in the desert makes me all itchy and cranky.

Speaking of The Joshua Tree album…

More of these trees are found in the Mojave Desert than anywhere else on earth.  I think they are hideous.
These creepy trees are everywhere, and they seem like they never grow.  Some are the same shape and size every year that we drive past them.

Do you like the desert…?

We have family in Southern AZ and Nevada…lots of desert. I dunno…it’s different from all the green that I’m used to so it’s interesting at first and people from Tucson tell me that the desert in bloom is beautiful…I’ve never seen anything there that looks like it would bloom anything, though.
Are those trees actual trees?? Or cactus?? Or a hybrid?
