Quinoa. Do you love it? Ever had it? Can you pronounce it? (keen-wah)
What is quinoa? People usually think it’s a grain, but it’s actually a seed. It is super high in protein (and it contains all 9 essential amino acids, so it is a complete protein, like meat) and is gluten free and cholesterol free.
Where do I get it? It has become so popular that you can pretty much purchase quinoa in any grocery store.
How do I prepare it? You will need to rinse quinoa before cooking it, but you can prepare it just like rice. You can do it on the stove top, but I just use my rice cooker. One cup of rinsed quinoa to two cups of liquid.
Why do I need to rinse quinoa? There is a natural, bitter coating around the seed. When you rinse it, you dissolve the coating and eliminate it. Some quinoa is pre-rinsed, but unless it specifically says it on the package, I would always rinse the quinoa.
There are tons of quinoa recipes out there, but I have pulled together a small collection from some of my favorite bloggers. Enjoy!
