Fall comforts of home… they are important even if you’re far away.

When I think about the phrase “the comforts of home” the word that comes to mind is cozy and the mental image I have is of crisp and cool fall evenings at home. There are certain foods, certain decor and certain smells that my family has come to associate with fall, and each year I make sure to give them their “fall fix.”

Warm and inviting smells should be all through the house during fall. Apple, cinnamon, pumpkin spice – those are all yummy scents. Candles and the occasional loaf of fresh baked bread or muffins all make our home smell wonderful. I can’t always have a candle lit, and it’s actually rare that I bake anything these days, so one of my simple tricks to keep the house smelling like fall is by creating this easy centerpiece.

Popping those cinnamon scented pine-cones into a big tarnished silver bowl and adding in mini pumpkins takes less than a minute, looks fabulous and smells even better. You could use any kind of a container for this, but for fall, I like the patina that tarnished silver creates. It’s perfect for when I want a bit of subdued shimmer.

You could mix these scented pine cones in a big bowl of apples or fall leaves as well. No rules and easy to do. My favorite kind of decorating.

In addition to a yummy smelling home, I think proper lighting helps to create a cozy space. I love candle light. These quick and easy jar candle hurricanes bring fall right on indoors and provide a cozy glow.

These are so easy to make and are inexpensive as well! You can see the full tutorial here.

And of course, a cozy fire on a cold evening definitely helps us to feel the comforts of home!

Cozy by the fire.

The two-legged people aren’t the only ones who enjoy a nice fire in the fireplace!

This fall, Marie Callender’s is preparing to re-launch the Comforts from Home Project by bringing the comforts of home to those who protect America’s homes every day: the brave men and women of the U.S. military.

Marie Callender’s is also teaming up with the USO to support USO Operation Celebration™, a program that shares a bit of home with our troops and helps them celebrate the holidays year round. Every time you enter a code from specially-marked packages of Marie Callender’s meals or desserts, Marie Callender’s will make a donation to the USO to support USO Operation Celebration™

You can also help by taking part in the Facebook Photo Challenge. Submit your own photos in support of the USO, using #comfortsfromhome – what does home mean to you? The Scripps Network will donate $1 to the USO for every photo submitted, up to $10,000! The Scripps Network is behind some of your favorite channels. Some photo submissions might be featured on air for HGTV‘s Kitchen Crashers (11/9 and 11/14), The Travel Channel‘s American Heroes (11/9), and Food Network‘s Guy’s Grocery Game (12/15 at 9pm EST and 12/19), are all helping to take part in the photo challenge.
