The boy has standards. (They’re low, but they’re standards.)

January 7, 2010 16 Comments

On Tuesday Devin came home from Spanish class telling us about a Christmas custom in Spain. Instead of hanging up stockings, Spaniards put out their shoes on Christmas Eve. The shoes are filled with treats.
In class, everyone took their shoes and put them out in the hallway. A secret somebody then put a treat in each person’s shoes.
(At this point, I am thinking, eeeeeew! Gross! I know what Devin’s shoes look like; smell like; where they’ve been and what they’ve stepped in… ewww! I wouldn’t dream of eating anything that was placed in his shoes, wrapped or not. ewww!)
Devin said his treat was a Hershey’s Kiss.
Conner asked, “Did you eat it?”
Devin replied with disgust, “No I didn’t eat it….”
(For me, the angels are singing the Hallelujah Chorus at this point. Years of trying to de-bunk The Five Second Rule, while complaining about the stench of the boys’ shoes are paying off! He recognizes that his shoes are disgusting!)
Devin continues; “…. it was gross! It was the almond kind. ew.”
So to summarize, toe jam is no problem, but almonds turn his stomach. Oy.

Haha! They have the same tradition here in Germany, but the shoes are left out the night before December 5th for Saint Nikolaus. The rule is, they have to be clean shoes or else nothing will be left…

Mmm… Hershey’s with almonds. I’ll take it, if nobody else wants it. It was still wrapped, right?

So I take it this is why people say… boys will be boys! I’ve only got girls, they seem to be more picky about dirty stuff.

LOL!!! This is a GREAT story!

I saw the kids in our Spanish classes doing this same thing before Christmas. I think it’s really cool that the Spanish teachers do cultural things like that too along with teaching the language.

I would have eaten it, I figure it’s my foot ick. But then I may or may not have pulled something chocolaty from the garbage as long as nothing wet was touching it. I know, I know, I have serious issues! I said maybe…

🙂 I don’t like almonds either! You should have seen me New Years Eve trying to keep Jason from eating the popcorn we spilled on the movie theater floor. That kid is FAST!
