A Green Smoothie. (It actually tastes good…. who’d a thunk?.)

January 17, 2013 9 Comments

Many of you know that I don’t like veggies, but I am happy to report that I’ve been managing to get a little more of them these days.  (Does anyone else find it mildly hilarious that one of my most popular posts is on how to store fresh fruits and veggies…?)

This green smoothie is chock full o’ nutrients and it tastes much better than it looks!

recipe, smoothie, weight loss, spinach, avocado, protein
Seriously.  It tastes really good.  For reals.

I do a boot camp work out on weekday mornings, and one of the new friends I’ve made there, Mollie, drinks these green smoothies.  I’d say they do a body good…  Check out those guns!

OK, fine.  It’s not just the smoothies…Mollie is also literally and figuratively working her butt off.

Making this smoothie is very easy and is very good for you.  Mollie gave me a basic recipe to follow, and I pretty much stick to what she said to put in it, with only a few changes:

  • 2 handfuls of fresh spinach leaves
  • 1 banana
  • 1 apple, cored and cut into chunks (leave the peel on.)
  • 1 avocado (for the love of all things holy, don’t leave the peel on!)
  • cup of ice
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cocoa powder
  • 2 or 3 prunes
  • 2 cups of almond milk (I’ve been using almond-coconut milk)
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder

Toss it all in the blender (or juicer, if you’re one of those people.)
These are the basic ingredients, but add in berries, juice… whatever you want.  At the end of the day, you’re still getting a big shot o’ spinach and nutrients.

Popeye would say that’s a good idea.

By the way, this makes a pretty good sized batch.

Be sure to check out the easy, make-ahead chicken recipe so that you have lots of lean protein on hand!

Mollie says it’ll keep in the fridge for 24 hours.  However, believe it or not, mine doesn’t last that long.  Veggies.
I know.  Weird.
I like it!
Hey, Mikey!

I do a similar smoothie, but this sounds really good! I’ve never put cocoa in… hmm… I’ll give it a try in the morning 🙂

I love juicing and smoothies…. Do you know what is a fantastic add in to that. Kiwi and plum. They add a nice zip!

MiMi’s comment just had me laughing out load! 🙂 The avacado is seriously throwing me, but I think I’ll try it this weekend anyway. Thanks Viv and Mollie!

I’ve been doing something similar, but haven’t added in greens… that is a great idea!

Love the Popeye shirt your friend has on, cute!
